Diana is a photographer and musician who combines her musical skills with her still and video photography to tell stories about places she has been, people she has met and birds and animals in the wild with which she has been fortunate enough to come into contact. She was born in Columbus, Ohio and attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio where she received her Bachelor's degree and perhaps more importantly, met people there who were to have a profound influence on her artistic path. At Ohio University Prof. Ronald P Socciarelli introduced her to New York-based composer Alec Wilder who subsequently brought her to the attention of jazz pianist Marian McPartland. After Marian invited Diana to study jazz piano with her Diana moved to New York City and began studying with Marian and performing with her own trio. Marian served as a great mentor and introduced Diana to other jazz greats. During that period Diana began photographing those people in rehearsals and performances as well as her new home, New York City. Her love for photography soon overtook her love for performing jazz and she became a passionate photographer, developing 35mm color film, setting up an enlarger and producing color prints in Besseler tanks in her bathroom darkroom.
As digital technology took hold Diana evolved into a technology guru and returned to school to get her Master's degree at New York University. While working on a multimedia project entitled Impressionism at the Courant Institute she met her husband, computer scientist and mathematician, the late Jacob T. Schwartz. Together they created many multimedia projects including Animated Relativity based on Jack's popular book Relativity in Illustrations
. Jack and Diana traveled extensively throughout their 23-year marriage sharing their enthusiasm for digital storytelling and computer-aided education. Diana taught the very first multimedia courses at NYU's School of Continuing Education after starting the digital multimedia program for them. She taught there for seven years. During this period Jack and Diana took many trips abroad that resulted in wonderful photographic opportunities for Diana. Jack's influence on Diana's photography and computer skills was enormous during this period.
Though mostly self-taught she has studied digital printing and color management at the International Center of Photography in New York.
Diana is an avid kayaker, hiker and bicyclist and spends most of her time traveling and taking photographs.
Diana uses Nikon gear including the camera that her friends call the "camera that changed her life" - the Nikon D3s and her new amazing Nikon D4.
